May Newsletter & Marathon Results
4 A’s Newsletter Decided I needed a major catch up session again so that everyone knows what has happened, and what is happening soon! Nominations and Awards At the end of last year Newark and Sherwood had their Sports Review and Matthew won junior Disabled Sportsperson for the second year running. I also collected the award for Coach of the Year. Thanks to all the parents who conspired to get me the nomination. Matthew was also short listed for the Sports Disability Units Most Improved Athlete, and Nottinghamshire Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the year. Brendon and his mum sneaked 3 nominations for me past the Nottinghamshire judges, and I was placed on the Notts Roll of Honour.
Bag Packing
Our annual bag-packing event at the Co op in Balderton was also very successful thanks to the choir of Callum, Karl and Hannah. Were they being paid to stop?! Thanks also to all the parents who made sure the eggs weren’t put under the baked beans! We banked £525. The Christmas Raffle also made almost £300.
Coffee Morning
On March 1st 4 A’s held our first ever coffee morning. Thanks to Yvonne for all her hard work organising the venue, helpers, stalls etc. We made a total of £300 to put in the kitty.
Come and have a go
Sadly the “come and have a go session” had to be cancelled because it snowed! I will try to rearrange a date later in the summer when, hopefully, the weather will be a little bit kinder to us.
Lincoln Marathon
This is traditionally the start to our racing season and the weather was far gentler than last year. Matthew, Matt, Katie B. and Christopher, all paddled well. Chris has been asked to join Lincoln Lightning squad so we may be seeing him at Holme Pierrepont soon. The results are on the website.
April Regatta
Kieran paddled his first 200 metres in horrid conditions, Matthew and Matt tried out as K2 partners, and Karl outdid everyone with a stunning 14 seconds off his 500 metre race. Again full results are on the website.
Calder MarathonA small but select band travelled up to Dewsbury for the first of Viv’s marathons. Despite the attack swan half way along the course, the only swimmer was Matthew, thankfully after he’d crossed the finish line. Full results are on the website. Thank you…. Firstly to Hannah (and Michelle) for their help at the Disability Gymnastic and Trampolining festival. Special thanks to Brendon’s mum and sister whose market stalls have helped raise over £1000 for the club. Well done girls, that takes stamina! Thanks also go to Southwell Lions club who gave us £350 for some wing paddles and to help pay some of Matthews boat, and Newark Rotary Club for the £1500 to pay for a Marauder K2 boat.
May RegattaThe weather was much kinder than in April, and I think a few people may even have got a suntan on the Saturday! It was nice to see Skippy’s group as that added to the competition. Hopefully they will be there in June, as Kieran would like to have a go at the 200 K2 with Cameron. Christopher and Jonathon look like a promising pairing for the Lightning K2, hopefully they will both enter the Lightning races at the next regatta. My apologies to Hannah, as I confused the timetable and she arrived too late for her race. To add insult to injury she ended up swimming when trying out the Hodi K2 with Cameron. In the K2 500 metres Matthew and Matt took 3 seconds off their PB, and finished 3 seconds ahead of Lucy and myself. Poor Lucy had to suffer my back seat coaching for all 3 of the K2s this time. Matthew and Lucy both went for the early bath in the K1 500. This left Chris to come in first in the mens race. Heather was beaten by less than a second by Jade in a neck a neck ladies race. Matthew and Matt shaved 2 hundredths of a second off their 200 K2 time. Martin and Carl paddled really well in their first race together to beat Heather and Katie. In the 200 K1 ladies race Jade took 12 seconds off her PB to beat Katie. Carl, Martin, and Cameron attempted the distance for the first time in the mens race, but the winner was Matthew who took another second off his PB. On Sunday there were fewer paddlers but the competition was just as heated. The K2 1000 metre race saw Lucy and I, Matthew and Matt neck a neck until the last 10 yards, when the 2 boys ended up swimming for the line. Heather drew the short straw and had to paddle with Steve!
Coming EventsThe first camp of the year at Thornton’s Holt 30th May to 1st June June Regatta at Holme Pierrepont on the 7th and 8th. Derwent marathon on June 22nd July Regatta at Holme Pierrepont on the 5th and 6th.
CongratulationsTo Matthew and Lucy, as they have been selected to represent Paddle-Ability with the Great Britain Team at the European Championships in Milan on the 17th and 18th of May. Maybe they will remember which way up the boats should go! There is a possibility that they will be on Eurosport so look out for them, and of course our hero Tim Brabants will be paddling in the 500 and 1000 metres. We hope they have a great time and bring home a few medals each to show off at the June regatta. For now happy paddling Julie

| Considering the time of year it was a pretty good day for racing, dry, with a small breeze. The lightnings set off first, with Christopher completing the course in third place in the under 10’s race. Matthew, paddling Lincoln for the first time in his Tor, managed a creditable 5th in Div 8. In Div 9 a stray narrow boat upset Matt’s balance and had him taking the early bath, but he still got back in and just overtook Katie before the finish. Well done everyone, a good days racing. | It was a cold and rainy day…… The ferocious swan attacked all who went near his nest. Matthew went for a victory roll after winning the Div 8 race. Pity he only knows how to get half way! Still, it was 4 ½ minutes faster than the last Calder K1 he raced. James is still recovering from his operation, and, he forgot his leg, (good job the head is screwed on) so he can be forgiven for his Sunday afternoon paddle. Brendon was only 5 seconds outside his personal best. Ohh, so close Bren, better luck next time. Katie knocked 5 ½ minutes off her previous best marathon time, and Chris took nearly 2 minutes off his. All in all, another good days racing, with medals for everyone. Excellent.
